When not fishing, you should try the Zip Line Canopy Tours, which is an exciting and fascinating way to see the rainforests as you travel above the treeline. As you zip above the canopy, checkout the White-Faced Monkeys and scarlet McCaw's.

Prefer to stay on the ground? Then checkout the ATV Tours that allow you to see so much more than you can on foot. Possibly you just want to relax, and they have that covered with the Oxygen Spa, which offers facials, manicure, pedicure, reflexology, and more.

There are some great restaurants to choose from (we recommend the Hook-Up restaurant & Bar, and the AlFresco Beach Club Restaurant. Chill out at the Beatle Bar, on Jaco beach, or Clarita's Bar and Grill,

Be sure to visit Tortuga Island

You should try and visit the Tortuga Island (a popular destination), incorporate it into your boat charter, perhaps. See the dolphins and sailfish, or even whales.

Quepos, North Puntarenas

Quepos is a small harbor town. It's main claim to fame is as one of the best places for sport fishing in the world. It's a great place to charter a boat. Contact Days Yacht Charters for more details or phone +1 (305) 515-4735.

Fishing fans can choose to fish both inshore and offshore and grab themselves some marlin, sailfish, snapper, amberjack, wahoo, dorado, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, and roosterfish. Quepos is the home of one of the most attractive marinas in Costa Rica. There are multiple fishing competitions every year at this popular fishing resort.

There are many other pleasant ways to enjoy yourself at Quepos with Canopy Tours, Kayaking, Horseback Riding, and Surfing.

Each February, there is a significant festival with parades, concerts, and a carnival. The most popular fishing months are from December to August. Lots of rain in September and too hot in April, so pick wisely.

Tamarindo

Tamarindo is yet another popular fishing location in Costa Rica. The weather is always just perfect, there are blue waters and white sand, and there is plenty of nightlife and restaurants.

Tamarindo is located about four and a half hours from the airport. This town is great for fishing, but it is definitely a tourist location, very Americanized, and in peak summer the beaches are a bit crowded. There is no rainforest to see (its dry forest) In September and October it trains a lot

Ok, that's the bad side, but the good side is that the fishing is excellent! It is well known for some of the best fishing in Guanacaste province and is on the list of the main fishing destinations in the country. Full-day and half-day fishing charters are available all year round for Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Roosterfish, big Cubera snappers, and more. Contact Days Yacht Charters for more details or phone +1 (305) 515-4735.

Types of Fish You May Catch in Costa Rica

Dorado

Dorado is one of the most frequently seen fish here in Costa Rica. They have a large protrusion over the eyes and are usually around thirty pounds, but you will occasionally see large specimens up to fifty-five pounds. Males are generally larger, and the females have a less pronounced hump over their eyes. Their standard color is golden green, but they change color to a bright blue with a black stripe when fighting against the fisherman.

Guapote

If you want to try some freshwater fishing, then you really should try fishing for Guapote or as you might know them, Rainbow Bass. They are very intelligent and aggressive, feeding on anything from crayfish to worms. The bigger specimens usually are found in the deeper, colder water. They typically are around three pounds to ten pounds. The world-record Rainbow Bass was actually caught in Costa Rica (1991) and weighed in at twelve pounds, nine ounces. The best place to try is Lake Arenal.

Marlin

Marlin is probably the most popular game fish anywhere. In Costa Rica, there are three different species of Marlin to catch.

  1. Blue Marlin - A silvery-white belly with blue fins and tail.
  2. Striped Marlin - A long compressed body that has vertical stripes on its sides.
  3. Black Marlin - A Black/Dark Blue upper body, silvery body below.

You are most likely going to come across the Blue Marlin. It will probably be in the range of between two hundred and five hundred pounds, but specimens of over nine-hundred pounds have been caught.

Roosterfish

A lot of people come to Costa Rica for the roosterfish, which you will find on the west coast. The color usually is silver, and they will range in size between fifteen to forty pounds, although specimens of around eighty pounds have been caught. The best way to catch them is by using slow trolling live bait such as herring.

Sailfish

Costa Rica is possibly the best place anywhere to catch Big Pacific Sailfish in quantities. The average weight of a Costa Rica sailfish is around one hundred pounds. You could even catch a two hundred pound whopper. You will be amazed at how fast they swim, and one was also recorded at over sixty mph.

Snapper

Costa Rica is home to a whole bunch of different varieties of snapper. They are a cautious fish and will be found around rocks and reefs. They are most commonly found on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica but can be located on either coast.

Snook

Snook are usually found on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica around the mouths of rivers., They can be seen in both fresh and saltwater. Snook are also delicious when caught, and you will just love the rich flavor. The record catch of a Caribbean Snook is fifty-pounds, but forty-pound monsters are caught frequently.

Tarpon

The Tarpon is also found mostly on the Caribbean coast and is often caught using live-crabs. They can reach almost eight feet in length and around three hundred pounds.

Tuna

You can find Tuna feeding alongside spinning Dolphins. Tuna can be caught all-year-round and can often reach over three-hundred pounds. Whatever size of Tuna you catch, you are sure to get a good fight and a lot of fun.

You will come across Yellowfin, Skipjack, and Bigeye Tuna, the most common of them is the yellowfin, which fortunately is the best tasting one.

Wahoo

Commonly called the fastest fish in the ocean with recorded speeds of up to sixty mph. They can be found anywhere in Costa Rica waters but usually alone, so they are a challenge to catch. Sometimes you may locate a small group of up to five fish. Trolling with live bait is the best method of catching them.

Best Months for the Type of Fish You Want to Catch

These are the absolutely optimum times to fish in Costa Rica. Avoid December through to February unless you want snapper and roosterfish. Other months fish will be good but not as good as the months given for each variety of fish.

Blue Marlin - May to September

Black Marlin - May to August

Sailfish - April to August

Yellowfin Tuna - June to September

Dorado - April to September

Snapper - All year round

Wahoo - May to August

Roosterfish - All year (not quite so good in September)

Your Fishing Adventure - Six Key Points to Consider

Planning Your Trip For the Right Month

The best time of year to travel to Costa Rica for a fishing charter is anytime. There are always Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado, Tuna, Roosterfish, Grouper, and Snapper to be had on the pacific coast; It is the same for Tarpon on the Caribbean coast. However, if you are looking for big game fish like Marlin, the best season is between April to October. That is a general answer. Of course, the conditions are best in different parts of the coastline at different times. This is the sort of expertise that we at Days Yacht Charters can help you with.
